The Situation With Drug Addiction

More and more people experiment with different drugs. The majority of them develop an addiction that eventually harms every aspect of their lives including ruined relations, lost jobs, and wages, or even deaths. The latest stats reveal the horrible figure of 1695 fatal victims in Indiana in 2019. Most of them are teens and adolescents without the slightest chance to get back to normal life.

Signs of Drug Addiction

Different types of drugs cause different changes in people’s appearance and behavior. The most common signs in every case include:

  • Marijuana. The addict has dilated pupils, red eyes, reddening of the lips, dry mouth He stays mobile, want to move and do something. His speech is accelerated, he is in a hurry. At the end of intoxication, people get very hungry.
  • Opiates. The most common sign is sleepiness at the most inappropriate moments. The addict’s speech is slow, he can say the same thing several times. A person in this state is good-natured and calm, if nothing bothers. Narrow pupils are a very sure sign of opioid use: they do not react to light. The skin becomes pale, but the lips may be swollen and reddened. Pain sensitivity is greatly reduced. Violation of sleep and wakefulness are also often exhibited in addicts.
  • Psychostimulants. The addict is unusually lively, impetuous in actions and decisions. He can’t sit in one place. He speaks very quickly, jumps from one topic to another. People who use such drugs often have dilated pupils. If a drug addict can afford psychostimulants, he can take the drug for several days in a row. Some types of psychostimulants greatly increase the sexual desire, so they are often used together with a sexual partner. Intoxicated by stimulants, drug addicts can spend several hours doing one thing, for example, cleaning the house.
  • Hallucinogens. The addict has various hallucinations (visual, auditory). Long-term use of the drug causes depression and psychosis.
  • Sleeping pills. Drug intoxication is similar to alcoholic intoxication. The user’ speech becomes slurred and intertwined. Pill users have a dry mouth, their movement coordination is impaired. Some sleeping pills in high doses can cause hallucinations.

How Rehab Centers Can Help

Rehab centers are designed to treat people who suffer from an addiction to alcohol, medication and / or illegal drugs. As a rule, patients start their recovery with detox – withdrawal from alcohol and drugs under 24/7 medical and nurse supervision.

After detoxification, patients often experience various changes in mood, depression, poor sleep, uncontrolled thoughts, and great desire for drugs. That’s why the psychological counseling which follows detox helps patients understand their mistakes and return to a normal and natural life.

After the initial stabilization of the psychological and physical well-being, specialists focus on nurturing the patient’s personal responsibility and abstinence motivation.

Types of Treatment

Rehabilitation centers offer several major types of treatment:

  • Diagnostics and assessment. By using particular guidelines, doctors estimate the degree of addiction, its consequences and disorders of the patient’s personality. They assess mental, physical, and psychological health to create a personalized treatment plan.
  • Detoxification. Doctors and nurses strive to perform the detoxification process painlessly (it particularly concerns heroin detox), and the patient’s individual needs come first. Customers are kept under constant supervision of specialists while being through intensive therapy for the first 24 hours. Hospitals providing detox services are equipped according to ICU standards (system for following vital functions, oxygen therapy and respirators, devices for automatic delivery of drugs, laboratory).
  • Outpatient treatment. The team of psychiatrists and psychologists practice different psychological and social (psychosocial) treatment strategies, each with a different level and type of support to those recovering from drug addiction or alcohol. Various methods and approaches are combined to reach the best results.
  • Residential treatment. Patients live in sober houses for several weeks or months. During this time, they follow a specific recovery plan which includes group and individual counseling, physical exercising, educational classes, peer support groups, and many other useful activities. Residential treatment teaches people sober life and helps them understand how to deal with stress in a healthy way.
  • Post-treatment support. The follow-up care is really important because people are very likely to be exposed to cravings and stress when being emerged in a new environment. The goals of psychological support are aimed at helping patients at any given moment and creating trust, respect, encouragement and support for healthy and normal life.

Services Provided in Rehab Centers

Rehabilitation centers usually practice a holistic approach which means they address the whole spectrum of issues: mental, physical, social, psychological and spiritual. That means there’s a large gamut of services that should be provided. So, what do patients usually get?

  • Individual counseling. Customers meet with psychologists who help them understand the deep reasons behind cravings and their addictive behavior. A specialist can help an addict realize the inner conflicts and problems burdening him or her, and resolve those issues.
  • Group counseling. Here, peers share their experience and support each other. They can describe symptoms, problems faced, ways to deal with addiction and cravings, and so on. Group mentors organize activities for students to express themselves and encourage each other.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy. This psychological approach helps people understand the disruptive influence of their behavior and change it accordingly. It’s aimed at building coping strategies and emotional regulation.
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy. It’s aimed at defining and treating personality borderline disorders. Patients learn to change some self-destructive behavioral patterns, such as substance abuse.
  • Motivational interviewing. This form of classes helps addicts understand that there’s a better life possible, and they completely deserve it. They get necessary motivation and learn to set small and big goals.
  • Family counseling. Addicts’ relatives tend to have codependency, which only nurtures the disease of their loved one. During family counseling sessions, they learn to build healthy relationships, forgive and understand each other, and change behavioral patterns. Psychological counseling helps families realize the dangers of addiction and how to help addicts.
  • Evidence-based practices. Here, each clinic can apply their own approach. Pretty often, the Matrix model and SMART recovery approach are used.
  • 12-step meetings. The twelve steps approach is one of the most commonly used practices in both faith-based and non-religious centers. It implies step-by-step recovery with each stage aimed at understanding certain things. First, patients learn about addiction, they acquire skills for controlling their cravings and stresses. Later, they enter new spiritual levels and then can become peer mentors themselves. As a rule, the 12-step approach presupposes visiting Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings.
  • Expressive therapies. Those include arts, music, journalism and writing, and many other similar activities. By expressing thoughts and emotions, patients release negative energy and get inspired for sober creation. They also realize their art can be useful for peers.
  • Equine/pet therapy. These modalities prove to be useful for patients who learn to overcome stress and anxiety. Communication with pets teaches them responsibility and compassion. Some sober houses even have their own farms the residents of which care about poultry and animals.

Hospital-based wards are designed for detox, crisis and emergency treatment. If necessary, the patient is referred to other services for more specific treatment. This can be, for example, an in-house transfer for further treatment specific to the disorder, long-term therapy, outpatient rehabilitation or a connection to addiction counseling centers and local self-help groups. Relatives and all addiction aid facilities in the region are involved if necessary.

Counseling offices serve for outpatient treatment. Customers talk to psychologists, addiction experts and other specialists who help them deal with cravings, solve inner conflicts, and restore relationships with family. Pretty often, such type of treatment is recommended for people whose illness is conditioned by mental and psychological problems (depression, anxiety disorders, psychoses, personality disorders or trauma-related disorders).

Tips for Selecting a Rehab Center

When in search of a safe and efficient place, you should mind many aspects, not just cost and location. When it comes to residential treatment, every little thing matters – all in all, it’s about the comfort of the customer. Both spiritual and physical.

Here’s what you should pay attention to:

  • Types of treatment modalities. Aside from residential recovery, addicts usually need detox and outpatient treatment (or aftercare support). Ideally, all those services should be received in a single place to reduce stress and stay assured in the contact between mentors and the patient.
  • Location. When one plans to combine addiction treatment with work or education, it’s important to have the center located within a reasonable distance. On the opposite, patients of sober houses want a complete isolation from triggers and daily stresses. That’s why having a residential center in city suburbs is absolutely okay.
  • What’s the patient-to-staff ratio? When too many customers are served by a couple of doctors, none of them gets enough attention and services. Find out how many people a sober house accommodates, and how many people does the staff count – it will help you understand whether clients are treated well enough.
  • Is being in contact with family members allowed? Some centers ban calls and personal meetings with anyone, at least during the first stage of treatment. That might be emotionally painful and nervous for both patient and relatives. Ask about family communication policy – it’s important.
  • What’s the duration of treatment? Residential treatment tends to be more efficient when it lasts at least a month. The best results and long-term sobriety are observed when a person stays in a sober house for a few months. This time is enough for a complete re-programming of behavioral patterns.
