Today is Independence Day and as our nation celrates its 233rd Birthday, its never a bad idea to take a quick measure of what we've done with the liberty we have.
As it happens, I think we've done pretty well. We have turned the Founders' grand experiment in democracy into the finest nation the world has ever seen. Even accounting for the excesses of the current administration, an American today enjoys more freedom, more safety, more prosperity, and greater opportunity than at any other time in history. EVen though her edges seem threadbare at times, and we complain about certain things we don't like, America is still the place everyone else in the world wants to live.
With that in mind, let's begin Our Week in Review.
- If nationalized health care comes, will the President make sure union members don't pay their fair share? It doesn't sound like the equality out Founders wanted when they started their venture, does it?
- If you're devising the ideal tax policy, why would you take your cues from Walter Mondale and George H.W. Bush? Well, I guess if you're an "economic poseur" any pose that pleases your base will do.
- Glory be! The administration has finally done something to help stockholders. Well, really it was the SEC and not the White House, but let's not quibble.
- I'm pretty sure that when the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, they weren't looking for a hug.
- Is liberalism on the wane? If so, we have an extra reason to be joyful on this Independence Day.
- The Founders loved choice. Too bad we can't get some of that in our educational system.
- We can easily see the end result of the President's economic program. Just look west, where they've been running the progressive economic playbook page for page. The ruination of California need not happen everywhere else.
- When there's no more money left to tax, things really start to get interesting, don't they?
- We can never forget the Morning Conservative Reading List, compiled with skill by Karen Untereker.
That's all for this week. Before I go, I'll leave you with a little musical interlude. Who better to sing out this week's OWiR than Ray Charles performing his unmatched rendition of "America the Beautiful"?
Happy Independence Day, everyone. Go find a Tea Party and celebrate our nation's birthday in your best patriotic style.
